The Alaska State flag was designed by 13 year old Benny Benson. He won a territory wide contest held in 1926 for Alaska students grades seven to twelve. The design was then adopted as the official flag for the Territory of Alaska on May 2, 1927. It was later stipulated that the territorial flag would become the official flag of the State of Alaska.

The blue field is for the Alaska sky and the forget-me-not, the state flower. The North Star is for the future state of Alaska, the most northerly in the union. The Dipper is for the Great Bear - symbolizing strength.
